Subject: Drivers to support Stereo Viewing in VMD etc using Standard GeForce Cards

Dear Everyone,

I thought this might interest some people reading this list who use
programs such as VMD to visualise molecules. Up until now stereo
support has been restricted to SGI's and expensive professional graphics
cards like the NVIDIA Quadro series.

A number of cards have come out recently however based on the NVIDIA
Geforce1/2/3 chipsets. These often come with stereo glasses such as the
ASUS AGP-V7700 GeForce2 GTS Deluxe but the support is only for windows
9x and only supports games, it does not support Quad buffered OpenGL
stereo that is required by VMD. However, these cards differ very little
from the expensive professional versions and it is actually possible to
patch the NVIDIA drivers to make them support Quad Buffered Stereo and
hence do Stereo in VMD and similar programs.

The instructions are here:
http://www.stereovision.net/articles/nvidiaopengl/nvstereoogl.htm

I have so far tested this on with Windows 2000pro, the NVIDIA Detonator
3 v21.81 drivers and a GeForce2 GTS (about £70) with the ELSA Revelator
IR Glasses (about £50) and the Asus GeForce3 Deluxe (about £250) with
the Asus VR100 Glasses.

VMD 1.6 and Ov8.0 work a treat.

All the best
Ross
